With the storm comes spawns! CTPK color 020815 and CTPK form 020815

San Francisco has been insanely dry the past couple of years, due to an incredibly severe drought. I hope that changes soon! This past January was the first in a hundred years to have ZERO rainfall. My friends started calling it "June-uary" because of the beautiful sunny days.

Despite the bonus of being able to walk around in a T-shirt, I held off setting up spawns until a storm front was guaranteed. Luckily, a low pressure wave hit a couple of days ago, and I set up two pairs of CTPKs. Both of them spawned within 24 hours, and the males seem to be caring for the eggs and fry. I'm always  a little nervous when the males are in charge (a fact that spans both fish and humans....)

I spawned in glass tanks this time, so I was able to take some good pictures. Hopefully I can create spawn logs once they hit free-swimming in the next couple of days.
First pair: Metallic CTPKs focusing on color (CTPK color 020815)
I love this pair. The male is large bodied and has a great spread to his dorsal, but his webbing reduction could be better (especially in his caudal). The female has a beautiful bright blue color just like her mother, and has an almost complete mask. Her webbing reduction is decent, and I like the 2 ray in the caudal. One of their brothers has this same color and 2 ray caudal reduction, so I am hoping that the reduced rays get passed on.

Second Pair: Metallic CTPKs focusing on form (CTPK form 020815)
Another brother/sister pair from a different spawn from the above. Webbing  and ray reduction was much better in this spawn, although the color is not as even or as deep. They also have weaker bodies and the spread in the caudal isn't a consistent 180 like in the other spawn. I hope to combine these two lines in the future. Never got a pic of the male - too fast! I have other picture of him somewhere on the site though. I have spawned this pair before but neglected the fry, so they have no ventrals :/ Will not slack off this time around.

There is also a chance of CTDTPK - Jamie has had them pop out in the past. Crossing my fingers!

I'm looking forward to seeing the colors on your babies from the metallic pair!

Thank you Kurt! They are growing :) Right now they are starting to get some color and their ventral fins. Will be upping the water changes so hopefully some of them can come to the IBC convention in June.
