Because I am a crazy bearded dragon lady

Here is a video of my Weldon and Waldo eating superworms. Awwwww
The light yellow, much larger bearded dragon is the male. Notice that he has a larger head and more prominent beard that the female, and he slightly flexes his beard to make his throat look larger sometimes. The curious "head bob" means several things. When he is just bobbing his head, I think it is a territorial gesture. "This is mine!" Also it can be a "come hither" gesture towards Waldo, since he always does it when he sees her. Kind of a "check me out, I'm this big male with this big territory all around you, do you like me?" Weldon also seems to use his gentle head bob as a sort of affirmation - he will head bob after eating something, or when he is cuddling with me, or even when I look at him in his tank.

Weldon also has a more violent head bob, where he also slaps the ground with his foot. I'm pretty sure this is just an exaggerated "HOO HAA HEAR ME ROAR" kind of thing. Lizards have poor hearing, and so mostly rely on their very good eyesight to communicate through visual gestures like this. They can recognize gestures from surprising  distance! (Also people and food).

Waldo will occasionally arm wave. This is where she flexes her little arms in a graceful circle. It usually means she is showing submission. I have seen little dragons arm wave and then leap forward to nip one of their clutch mates - what subterfuge! Weldon has also employed this trick when his arch rival (another male bearded dragon) visited us. He would arm wave and then slowly come in for the attack (which we never let him do).

Beardies are great pets! They are interactive, which was surprising for me as a first-time lizard keeper, and they are also very cuddly when they want to be. Please please research before buying one though: there requirements are simple but strict. A great place to start is https://www.beardeddragon.org/articles/caresheet/. There are lots of of useful articles here!

Katie was kind enough to give Elrose and me a tour of her fishroom! Lots of neat little projects and the cutest goldfish in the world. She shows us that you can do a lot in a small apartment bedroom! Even when you are a graduate student :)
