RY Trad 040613

Spawn 112512 - Thanksgiving
Picture
Foundation light-bodied, clean, and INTENSE yellow show HMPK male by Pichet (Interfish, Thailand).
Picture
Darkbodied, intense red show HMPK female by Sieg Illig.

Spawn 040613
Picture
Favorite pineapple male out of the F1 spawn. BOV shortfin traditional PK male at Convention.
Picture
Nice body and fins, and impressive spread for having only a 2 ray split!
With this spawn, I hope to solidify the more traditional PK form of the pineapple male by crossing him to a female with reduced branching in the caudal. Neither betta has gaps between the unpaired fins in full flare, and both have almost no iridescence. The male has a prominent sloping anal and long ventrals suitable for a traditional PK, and the edges of his caudal are somwhat rounded and he has a slight spade tail. The female has great spread without increased branching, and has a nicely balanced appearance. Both have smooth toplines, and the female in particular has a strong peduncle.

Interestingly, the male accidentally killed the fry from his first spawning attempt by being a little too over-attentive! The fry were never allowed to leave the nest, and they probably starved. I removed the male after the fry were free-swimming in the next spawning attempt, and they survived.

073113 Newly Jarred Update

Picture
Largest fry. Very robust, and I am glad to see that the father passed on that great anal tip. The caudals seemed to have improved towards a traditional phenotype! (reduced branching but still 180 spread!)
Picture
Young pineapple that was unsure of flaring...time will tell!
Picture
Young female. Soooo many pineapples in this batch. I wish the caudal peduncles were stronger, but I'm really liking the ray reduction! Also, shooting in low light and through a plastic jar suck.

082713 Update

Picture
Loving the primary ray branching and the near 180 degree caudals I'm seeing
Picture
Need to work on those toplins and caudal peduncles though...
Picture
Only pineapple male. Unfortunately he has a caudal peduncle bump, so he will be going up for auction. I think due to some pretty severe neglect of this spawn around the 2 month mark...I was preparing for my qualifying exam >,<
Picture
Lovely clean yellow, only one of this spawn. She is just starting to color up her body. Love the yellow lips lol.
Picture
Two of the spawn had red spots in the fins. Really wish I had time to pursue this trait! I must realize my limitations and let someone else do it though...
Picture
Little reds sparring :) Some had more iridescence than others. I am planning to cross one of the cambodian daughters back to their dad.

Update 091013

Picture
My favorite favorite female from this spawn (she actually hits 180 when she fully flares - a little wary of the photo tank).
Picture
I love her smooth topline, balance between the unpaired fins, the 180 caudal with the reduced primary branching, and that anal tip on her anal!
Picture
Best cambodian based red female. Because of the quality of the pineapple above, I think I will instead do a sibling cross with the best red male rather than cross back to the sire. This red has many good qualities, but the 180 degree spread and primary branching of the pineapple points me to her.

Update 030114

I am very pleased with the 3 fish that I kept from this spawn (I also sent some to my grandfather). The two females (1 pineapple, one clean yellow) have almost no iridescence, and both have nice traditional PK form. The male has the best form out of all of my favorite pineapple male's sons, but he also has a lot of iridescence. I think my next move will be to cross a brother x sister to take advantage of both form and color! One concern, however, is that none of these fish inherited their father's great traditional dorsal, but instead inherited the mother's weaker one. I will have to watch out for weak dorsals if I am to spawn these brother x sister.
