I haven't had a failed spawn in a while (thank goodness) but I decided to put this one here to show that sometimes, even the oddest things can happen that can prevent you from getting that cross you've always wanted. In this case, Armando, my beautiful red traditional PK male from Sieg and Judy Illig, just could not figure out how to wrap my little yellow female. Again and again she came under the nest and nudged him, but he never responded. He later went blind, which makes me think that his eyesight was poor enough at this early stage to prevent him from seeing her cues successfully. It was awful to watch...went on for a LONG time. The female eventually dropped all her eggs in a corner and I removed her. I was never able to get a spawn from him. NEVER wait to spawn if you have an opportunity to! I could have spawned him many times, but just kept putting it off. Oh well...things happen :(

My very first prints of my own photographs came in, and wow!! I'm not used to seeing my photos on glossy paper, they look so snazzy! Way better than on a computer screen :-D I'm so happy lol. I got these done at adoramapix. They did an AMAZING job with both the printing and the packaging. And each 8x10 was only a dollar! Couldn't be any more satisfied :)
Finding insulated boxes for shipping bettas Sometimes finding insulated shipping containers for shipping fish can be really hard. I tend to ship out a lot more fish than I receive, so I'm always running low. You need a box that is insulated with preferably an inch of styrofoam to protect from rapid temperature changes, and then there has to be a sturdy cardboard box on the outside to protect the inner box from damage. Luckily, I work in a research lab that gets a lot of reagents shipped in these boxes!
Occasionally my lab's supply dries up, so I go journeying to surrounding labs to find them. People are surprisingly helpful when you describe what you are looking for. I managed to run into a tissue & organ laboratory that receives a lot of their samples in these perfectly sized containers! They have a strong, molded styrofoam that fits perfectly within a sturdy cardboard box. I think I'm ready for the show season! How to Flare Train Your Betta I made this quick video this morning while I was flare training my bettas. I usually flare train at least once a day, right before feeding them, either in the morning or in the evening (whenever I have more time). It is important to flare train you bettas so that: A) They develop their finnage to their maximum potential. In order to achieve the full "halfmoon" look, they must actively stretch the membrane between the rays. B) They can flare on command. Flaring on command is *very* important for showing. When the judge removes the card, the bettas are expected to flare and display. It is very difficult to judge a betta that is not displaying properly, and it is a severe fault if they have such poor deportment. |
