Betta burdigala male tending his newly hatched fry

Visit to Cory's Aquarium Co-op in Edmonds, WA. A must-go fish store if you are in the area! Better Burdigala Pics! Shooting in the blackwater tank has been a real challenge for me. Luckily, Mr. Burdigala was guarding his nest right next to the glass, so I was able to snap some good head and body shots of him. The pair of burdigala delinquents were also good subjects - they were too busy fighting to be shy!
These photos can now be found in the Betta burdigala section. How to Flare Train Your Betta I made this quick video this morning while I was flare training my bettas. I usually flare train at least once a day, right before feeding them, either in the morning or in the evening (whenever I have more time). It is important to flare train you bettas so that: A) They develop their finnage to their maximum potential. In order to achieve the full "halfmoon" look, they must actively stretch the membrane between the rays. B) They can flare on command. Flaring on command is *very* important for showing. When the judge removes the card, the bettas are expected to flare and display. It is very difficult to judge a betta that is not displaying properly, and it is a severe fault if they have such poor deportment. Lazy day with the fishies. Woke up to the Betta burdigala spawning again, so that was great start to my day :) Hoping for lots of those guys! They are listed as a vulnerable species, so I hope that I can spread them around to other hobbyists as much as I can. They are too beautiful to lose!
They now share a tank with several amano shrimps, a monogamous pair of Sterbai, and my little pygmy corey of unknown age, Bundy. I used to have a pair of them called Ted and Bundy, but poor Ted perished a couple months back. Ted and Bundy were a gift made in courtship from my boyfriend very early in our relationship (about 2. 5 years ago). Gentlemen, if you want to win your way into a fish lady's heart, come strolling in with the fish she's always wanted but never been able to get a hold of! These little guys came with me all the way from eastern Washington to San Francisco (and something like 6 different tank moves!) Little Bundy is getting a little stiff in his old age, but I still love him :) I also managed to jar a few more of the latest PK spawn 040613. Very excited for these guys! So far, only 3 have shown themselves as males, and I have a few more that think they are females. Hoping for a fairly balanced spawn so I can give out pairs lol.
Memorial to Macho...from female to big beautiful male! Everyone has that one special betta. For me, it was a little (soon to be huge) royal blue halfmoon betta that was given to me by Larissa as a FEMALE...little did we know that he would take the Castro to heart and become one of the biggest, most beautiful halfmoon males ever! Larissa gave a great talk on breeding and raising bettas to a very diverse crowd of fish hobbyists at the San Francisco Aquarium Society July meeting! I'm pretty sure her talk piqued a lot of interest in the audience, since even I have been a little bombarded with questions on betta breeding from some of my friends at SFAS lately ;) It's a disease, I tell you! |
